CTET Eligibility 2026: Qualification for Paper 1 and Paper 2, Age Limit
The CTET eligibility 2026 rules decide whether you can appear in Paper I (Classes 1–5), Paper II (Classes 6–8) or both. Eligibility is based mainly on your educational qualification and teacher training course, as laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). CBSE does not set an upper age limit, and there is no limit on the number of attempts.
The current session's exam is scheduled for 12 and 13 December 2026. This guide explains every qualification route for both papers, the 5% relaxation for reserved categories, rules for final-year students, the B.Ed rule for Paper I, and practical examples to help you check your own eligibility.

CTET Paper 1 Eligibility (Classes 1–5)
A candidate must meet any one of these conditions:
Route | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|
1 | Senior Secondary (Class 12) with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) |
2 | Class 12 with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 2-year D.El.Ed, as per the NCTE Regulations of 2002 |
3 | Class 12 with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) |
4 | Class 12 with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education) |
5 | Graduation and passed or appearing in the final year of a 2-year D.El.Ed |
Can B.Ed Candidates Apply for CTET Paper 1?
No. B.Ed is not an accepted qualification for Paper I. It was earlier listed as a route for primary teachers, but it is no longer valid after the Supreme Court held that B.Ed does not prepare teachers for the primary level. Some websites still show "graduation + B.Ed" under Paper I, but you should not rely on that. B.Ed holders can apply for Paper II.
CTET Paper 2 Eligibility (Classes 6–8)
A candidate must meet any one of these conditions:
Route | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|
1 | Graduation and passed or appearing in the final year of a 2-year D.El.Ed |
2 | Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in a 1-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) |
3 | Graduation with at least 45% marks and passed or appearing in a 1-year B.Ed, as per NCTE norms issued from time to time |
4 | Class 12 with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 4-year B.El.Ed |
5 | Class 12 with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in the final year of a 4-year B.A.Ed or B.Sc.Ed (or B.A/B.Sc.Ed) |
6 | Graduation with at least 50% marks and passed or appearing in a 1-year B.Ed (Special Education) |
Which CTET Paper Can You Take?
Your qualification | Paper I | Paper II |
|---|---|---|
Class 12 + D.El.Ed | Yes | No |
Class 12 + B.El.Ed (4-year) | Yes | Yes |
Class 12 + Diploma in Education (Special Education) | Yes | No |
Class 12 + B.A.Ed / B.Sc.Ed (4-year) | No | Yes |
Graduation + D.El.Ed | Yes | Yes |
Graduation + B.Ed | No | Yes |
Graduation + B.Ed (Special Education) | No | Yes |
If you are eligible for both papers, you can take both. Paper II is held in the morning shift and Paper I in the afternoon shift, so there is no clash.
Relaxation in Qualifying Marks for Reserved Categories
Candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC and differently abled categories get a relaxation of up to 5% in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination.
Requirement for general category | With 5% relaxation |
|---|---|
50% in Class 12 | 45% in Class 12 |
50% in graduation | 45% in graduation |
Example: An OBC candidate with 46% in graduation and a B.Ed degree can apply for Paper II, because the 50% requirement is relaxed to 45%.
This relaxation applies to the qualifying examination marks for eligibility. It is separate from any relaxation that recruiting authorities give in CTET qualifying marks after the exam.
Final-Year Students
Candidates who are appearing in the final year of D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed, B.Ed or the other listed courses can apply for CTET. They must complete the course and meet all conditions by the time they are considered for appointment. Passing CTET while still studying does not make a candidate eligible for a teaching job until the teacher training course is complete.
CTET Age Limit 2026
No upper age limit: CBSE does not set a maximum age for CTET.
Minimum age: CBSE does not prescribe a separate minimum age in the bulletin. In practice, candidates must have completed at least Class 12 and be enrolled in a teacher training course, so applicants are usually at least 17 to 18 years old. Some websites give different figures, so treat the qualification rules, not age, as the deciding factor.
Age for jobs: Recruiting bodies such as KVS and NVS set their own age limits for teacher posts. CTET eligibility does not replace those limits.
Nationality
Candidates should be:
A citizen of India, or
A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently, or
A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or certain East African countries intending to settle permanently in India.
Number of Attempts
There is no limit on the number of attempts. Candidates who have already qualified can appear again to improve their scores. Since the CTET certificate is valid for life, you only need to qualify once, but a higher score can help where recruiters give weightage to CTET marks.
CTET for In-Service Teachers
A recent Supreme Court ruling has made TET qualification an important requirement for many teachers already in service. CBSE reopened the CTET 2026 application window from 25 August to 1 September 2026 so that eligible teachers had a fair chance to apply. In-service teachers must still meet the same qualification rules listed above for the paper they choose.
Common Eligibility Questions
Can B.Tech Graduates Apply for CTET?
A B.Tech degree alone is not enough. B.Tech graduates can apply for Paper II only if they also hold (or are in the final year of) a recognised B.Ed or D.El.Ed and meet the percentage condition for graduation.
Is B.Ed Compulsory for CTET?
No. For Paper I, D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or Diploma in Education (Special Education) is required, and B.Ed is not accepted. For Paper II, B.Ed is one of several routes, along with D.El.Ed and 4-year integrated courses.
Is a Distance B.Ed or D.El.Ed Valid?
A distance or open learning course is valid only if it is recognised by NCTE. Always check that your institution and course are NCTE-recognised before applying.
Can Postgraduates Apply?
Yes, a postgraduate degree is acceptable, but you still need the required teacher training qualification (such as B.Ed or D.El.Ed) and must meet the graduation percentage rule.
Eligibility Examples
Candidate profile | Paper I | Paper II | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
Class 12 with 62%, final year of D.El.Ed | Eligible | Not eligible | D.El.Ed after Class 12 qualifies for Paper I only |
B.A. with 55%, completed B.Ed | Not eligible | Eligible | B.Ed is valid for Paper II, not Paper I |
B.Sc. with 48% (SC), completed B.Ed | Not eligible | Eligible | 5% relaxation lowers the 50% requirement to 45% |
B.Com with 58%, completed D.El.Ed | Eligible | Eligible | Graduation + D.El.Ed covers both papers |
Class 12 with 70%, final year of 4-year B.El.Ed | Eligible | Eligible | B.El.Ed covers both papers |
B.Tech with 65%, no teacher training course | Not eligible | Not eligible | A teacher training qualification is required |
How to Choose Your Paper While Applying
Match the paper to your career goal: Choose Paper I if you want to teach Classes 1 to 5, Paper II for Classes 6 to 8, or both if you are eligible and want wider options.
Pick the right Paper II option: Maths and Science teachers should take the Maths and Science section; Social Studies teachers should take Social Studies. Teachers of other subjects can choose either.
Choose languages carefully: Language I and Language II must be different. Pick languages you can read and teach comfortably.
Check fee impact: Applying for both papers costs slightly more than one paper, but gives you eligibility across Classes 1 to 8.
Keep details consistent: Your name, date of birth and category must match your certificates exactly.
Documents to Keep Ready
You do not upload most certificates while applying, but you will need them later for recruitment:
Class 10 certificate (for date of birth)
Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
Graduation mark sheets and degree, if applicable
D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed, B.Ed or other teacher training certificate (or proof of final-year enrolment)
Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC) or disability certificate, if claiming relaxation

CTET Eligibility Checklist
I have chosen the correct paper for my qualification.
My Class 12 or graduation percentage meets the requirement for my route, including any 5% relaxation.
My teacher training course is recognised by NCTE.
I have completed the course or am in its final year.
I understand that B.Ed does not qualify for Paper I.
CTET eligibility 2026 depends on the right combination of academic qualification and NCTE-recognised teacher training. D.El.Ed and B.El.Ed routes lead to Paper I, B.Ed and integrated courses lead to Paper II, and graduation with D.El.Ed or Class 12 with B.El.Ed opens both. Reserved category candidates get up to 5% relaxation in qualifying marks, final-year students can apply, and there is no upper age limit or cap on attempts. Check your route carefully before applying, and keep ctet.nic.in as your final reference.
